Another good game for UM boys. Final score : 90-45. Although the margin of the score is big, Unisza played a spirited game and tested our mettle early. Despite our good man-to-man defense (helped by a few dubious referee calls), We were not able to pull away and Unisza, though trailing, stayed within 4 or 6 points. That is until we switched to our 3/4 court zone press, early in the 2nd quarter and broke the game open. From there we were able to get steal after steal and quickly pulled away from Unisza. To Unisza's credit, they never lost spirit and continued to battle valiantly but our constant traps, deep rotation (other than Raymond who was being rested to recover from his twisted ankle suffered yesterday - all 11 other players got substantial minutes) and constant pressure wore them down and we were able to pull out a dominant win. Well done UM boys.

We have a day off tomorrow and resume our campaign on Tuesday where we will play our last group match v UTHM at 9:30am.

Cheers. Coach LY.

A good start for our UM boys. We still haven't played our best or reached our full potential. We missed a lot of layups and free throws but our good defense, athleticism and great depth kept us in front the whole game. Final score : 62-50 .. A hard fought, well earned WIN! Well done UM!

Below is our game stats for our MASUM Game 1 - UM v UPM.

The stats shows both our weakness and our strength. Our weakness in this game is the poor free throw shooting (34.2%) and poor 3-point shooting (11.11%). Our strength however is our good, tough defense - forcing 36 turnovers, drawing 23 fouls and getting to the foul line 19 times! - as well as our high paced, attacking, dribble penetration strength resulting in 18 fast break points and a dominant 42 points-in-the-paint.

I am confident as the competition progresses, our players will find their touch from the field and start shooting a better percentage. We will have to keep improving our defense from "good" to "great" and keep our attacking style. We also will have to increase our rebounding dominance.

Next opponent, Unisza at 5pm today.

Stay tuned!
Cheers,
Coach LY.

Ex-UM @ Xballer 2012 Update - Game 3

Ex-UM v WG Sport, Monday, March 19, 2012 - a tough, hard fought, well earned victory!

WG Sport having already lost 2 games, were already out of running for round 2. As a result, many of their players did not turn up and they only had 6 players. We on the other hand, continued to good (new) practice of arriving early and started the game with a full 11 players (only Poh Guan, who has yet to turn up for any of the games, was absent). However, the 6 players who did turn up for WG Sport put up a stirring and inspiring performance!

Ex-UM @ Xballer 2012 Update - Game 2

Ex-UM v Yu Nan Basketball Association - Sunday, March 18, 2012

After a long break (due to games venue scheduling conflict), we finally played our 2nd game. With the exception of Chin Chuan who couldn't attend, the rest of us arrived early for the game after suffering the effects of having many players arrive late in our 1st game. The early arrival enabled us to start really well and strong. This was also our first game trying out our new Read & React "tweak" against zone defenses.

Ex-UM @ Xballer 2012 Update - Game 1

Ex-UM v Mengsweb.com Feb 20, 2012 - a tough, TOUGH loss for us.

Even though 2 of our main offensive players (Ching and Chuan) were late and only available from 2nd quarter onwards, the 6 of us who were on time (myself, Phang, Ming Lip, Leong, Sem and Hung) were able to hold our own, finishing the 1st quarter trailing only 18-20.

Ex-UM @ Carlsberg Update - Game 4

Friday Dec 23, 2011 - as promised, a WIN! We beat Winepak narrowly 63-59. We started the game struggling on offense with both Ching and Ming Lip missing many in-close shots. Fortunately, our defense held up resulting in a low scoring 1st quarter 12-13.

Ex-UM @ Carlsberg Update - Game 3

Wednesday Dec 21, 2011 - a better showing last night though ultimately still a loss. Opponent (DNA) started well and we were down by 10 or more points very early. But we settled down, didn't allow them to pull away and kept chipping away at the deficit. DNA played well, hitting critical 3 pointers each time we drew near (for the game DNA hit 11 3-pointers!!) but with persistence, we finally caught up and after 3 quarters, even had a 1 point lead (61-60). Early in the 4th, DNA hit yet another critical 3 pointer and continued to hit critical jump shots after jump shots whilst we struggled to score on half court offense. Chee Ching Lew (who had scored 20 points through 3 quarters) uncharacteristically ran out of stamina in the 4th and scored only 2 points in the critical 4th quarter. This (both lack of Ching's usual scoring and our overall half court struggles) enabled DNA to keep a small 4 to 6 point lead. Still, for the most part we kept it close (fortunately for us Sem AwYong was "hot" throughout the game, hitting 5 3-pointers for the game). Unfortunately, in the last 5 minutes of the game, we again had uncharacteristic mental lapses / mistakes, with turnovers after turnovers, leading to easy fast break scores by DNA. With about 1+ minute left, we were still as close as 71-75, but 2 more consecutive turnovers (one by Sem and another by Poh Guan) put the game out of our reach. Final score : loss of 71-79.

Only one (Ching) of our 4 centers (Ming LipThierry Tan and Cheong Kok Leong were absent). Whenever we only have 1 of our centers, we tend to struggle mightily to score. Yesterday, we practically didn't score at all on our usually effective "secondary break". Hope more (all?) of our centers will attend the next game.

To our loyal supporters, thanks for coming to support us last night. As promised to the supporters, we did play much better than we did last Monday, though I do apologize that we didn't close the game out well at all.

Do come support us again tomorrow / Friday night 7:30pm vs WINEPAK. We promise a WIN!

Ex-UM @ Carlsberg Update - Game 2

Monday, Dec 19, 2011 - an uncharacteristic poor showing by all of us today (myself, Poh Guan, Sem AwYong, Thierry Tan Chin Chuan, Chee Ching Lew, Cheong Kok Leong, Jeffrey Ng and Tan Chun Pin). Opponent played aggressive and active all game. Without our usual dribble penetrators (Ming Lip and Gan Chin Phang) opponent's defense grew more and more aggressive and put our perimeter players under pressure. Result : Lots of turnovers. Final score : 76-56 Loss. Apologies to supporters who came to support us as we did not put in a good showing.

Our next game is WEDN 21 Dec, 7:30pm vs DNA. Players please confirm your attendance. Supporters do come support us again. We promise to put on a better showing!!
