Ex-UM @ Carlsberg Update - Game 4

Friday Dec 23, 2011 - as promised, a WIN! We beat Winepak narrowly 63-59. We started the game struggling on offense with both Ching and Ming Lip missing many in-close shots. Fortunately, our defense held up resulting in a low scoring 1st quarter 12-13.

Ex-UM @ Carlsberg Update - Game 3

Wednesday Dec 21, 2011 - a better showing last night though ultimately still a loss. Opponent (DNA) started well and we were down by 10 or more points very early. But we settled down, didn't allow them to pull away and kept chipping away at the deficit. DNA played well, hitting critical 3 pointers each time we drew near (for the game DNA hit 11 3-pointers!!) but with persistence, we finally caught up and after 3 quarters, even had a 1 point lead (61-60). Early in the 4th, DNA hit yet another critical 3 pointer and continued to hit critical jump shots after jump shots whilst we struggled to score on half court offense. Chee Ching Lew (who had scored 20 points through 3 quarters) uncharacteristically ran out of stamina in the 4th and scored only 2 points in the critical 4th quarter. This (both lack of Ching's usual scoring and our overall half court struggles) enabled DNA to keep a small 4 to 6 point lead. Still, for the most part we kept it close (fortunately for us Sem AwYong was "hot" throughout the game, hitting 5 3-pointers for the game). Unfortunately, in the last 5 minutes of the game, we again had uncharacteristic mental lapses / mistakes, with turnovers after turnovers, leading to easy fast break scores by DNA. With about 1+ minute left, we were still as close as 71-75, but 2 more consecutive turnovers (one by Sem and another by Poh Guan) put the game out of our reach. Final score : loss of 71-79.

Only one (Ching) of our 4 centers (Ming LipThierry Tan and Cheong Kok Leong were absent). Whenever we only have 1 of our centers, we tend to struggle mightily to score. Yesterday, we practically didn't score at all on our usually effective "secondary break". Hope more (all?) of our centers will attend the next game.

To our loyal supporters, thanks for coming to support us last night. As promised to the supporters, we did play much better than we did last Monday, though I do apologize that we didn't close the game out well at all.

Do come support us again tomorrow / Friday night 7:30pm vs WINEPAK. We promise a WIN!

Ex-UM @ Carlsberg Update - Game 2

Monday, Dec 19, 2011 - an uncharacteristic poor showing by all of us today (myself, Poh Guan, Sem AwYong, Thierry Tan Chin Chuan, Chee Ching Lew, Cheong Kok Leong, Jeffrey Ng and Tan Chun Pin). Opponent played aggressive and active all game. Without our usual dribble penetrators (Ming Lip and Gan Chin Phang) opponent's defense grew more and more aggressive and put our perimeter players under pressure. Result : Lots of turnovers. Final score : 76-56 Loss. Apologies to supporters who came to support us as we did not put in a good showing.

Our next game is WEDN 21 Dec, 7:30pm vs DNA. Players please confirm your attendance. Supporters do come support us again. We promise to put on a better showing!!

Ex-UM @ Carlsberg Update - Game 1

Sunday Dec 18, 2011 - Only 7 players attended today's game : myself,Poh Guan, Ming Lip, Thierry Tan Chin Chuan, Chee Ching Lew, Cheong Kok Leong and Jeffrey Ng (Hung). Opponent (Forged Racing) was a young team with reasonable skill and ability. Their 212 zone was very aggressive and active, causing many deflections and a few steals / turnovers, Still our man-to-man defense gave them trouble and we finished the 1st quarter ahead 15-9.

They started the 2nd quarter well and went on a mini run with several 3 pointers to take a small 15-20 lead. From there we settled down and our steady man-to-man defense eventually wore them down. By half time, we managed to regain a slim 25-24 (having lost the 2nd quarter 10-15).

The 3rd and 4th quarter saw our man-to-man defense just wear them downand as they got tired, their 212 zone defense was no longer as tough or active and we started beating them even in half court offense. We won the 3rd and 4th quarters 18-19 and 16-4, allowing us to finish with a final score of 59-36.

Whilst our defense was good, our offense (which only generated 59 points) seems a bit lacking. Hopefully it was because we were missing 2 of our high scorers in Phang and Sem. Which also means attendance tomorrow for our next game is important!!

Well done Ex-UM!

KL Open Update : Ex-UM v PSBT (today)

By tip-off time, there were only 5 players : myself, Sem AwYong, Cheong Kok Leong, Ming Lip and Chee Ching Lew! Gan Chin Phang as usual arrived at tip-off. Bik Yih arrived shortly after. But our starting 5 had a fantastic start, going on a 16-2 run to start, before settling for a 9 point 1st Quarter lead (22-13). We traded baskets for awhile at the start of the 2nd quarter before going on another big run to take our lead to 27 points (47-20) at halftime! At the start of the 3rd Quarter, PSBT went on a mini run of their own with a couple of 3 pointers, cutting our lead to 20, but we responded with another BIG run to take our lead back up to even higher - a 38 point lead (73-35) after 3 Quarters. After that, we were able to cruise to the final buzzer. Final score : 92-51. Ching had his usual strong game with 31 points and Sem had MANY assists on good passes (while scoring 10 points as well). I chipped in 12 points, Ming Lip with 10 points, Phang with 6 points and Bik Yih with 6 points (including a 3 point play) but the big surprise was Leong who played substantial minutes, played good defense, was active on half court offense and ran the full court on every fast break, scoring 14 points for the game! Leong attending the last 2 Ex-UM practice / friendly vs 5th college really showed its benefits and effect! Well done Leong and all Ex-UM players who played today! Cheers, Coach LY

Ex-UM Win-Loss Record

After our very successful run in Sultan Cup Subang Zone (where Ex-UM emerged Champions), there was a break of 2 weeks before our next game (in KL Open vs KBT and in Sultan Cup Inter Zone vs TNS). Unfortunately I was overseas during these 2 weeks (for work) and was not able to arrange any practices. The 2 week lay-off showed as we resumed our season in poor form, losing to KBT 54-64 (with respect, a winnable game) and 3 days later, losing again to TNS 74-82 (again, a winnable game).

However, as is usual for Ex-UM, the more we play, the better we play. Our play against TNS was better than our play against KBT and last night, we played our 3rd game (after the 2 week break) against Chinese Media in KL Open, where we further improved our play. A tough game throughout, we found ourselves trailing early (24-30 at half time) before we finally regained some of our old form to close the gap in the 3rd quarter (42-40 after 3 quarters). The game remained close throughout the 4th quarter and even though our usual main player, Phang, fouled out, we finally pulled away late in the game (with a couple of critical 3 point shots (by me!), a couple of critical 3 point plays (by Ching), a critical steal (by Jack) and great focus and defense all round!) for a well earned 59-52 win.

Our play continue to improve but we are still not back to our Sultan Cup Subang Zone "Championship" form yet. Worse, our next game is 13 November, another 2 week break! It is therefore important that we (Ex-UM) continue to have practices these next 2 weeks to keep our form up.

With our win last night, our win-loss record now stands at 15-4! Well done Ex-UM.
