Ex-UM v 5th College Friendly Match

Ex-UM will be playing a friendly match against 5th College tonight, particulars as follows:

Day/Date : Friday, 31/10/2008
Time : 8pm (though, likely will start late ~ 8:30pm)
Venue : 4th College Outdoor Basketball Court

(note : game is being played at 4TH COLLEGE (not 5th college) as the lights and court conditions at 4th college is better than 5th)

Ex-UM v 1st College Friendly Match

Results : Ex-UM won 77-44

After a single practice the night before where we introduced for the first time, the new "Read & React" offensive system which I purchased online from Coach Rick Torbert's Better Basketball website, Ex-UM ran the new offense against 1st College with a surprising degree of success.

However, 1st College was basically using the friendly match as their tune-up and preparation towards the UM inter-college (SUKMUM) games scheduled to be played in January 2009. Consequently, 1st College's best player,Amirul (Varsity Team Assistant Captain) who had to play the role of "Player-Coach" focused more on the "coaching" side, didn't start the game and played limited minutes.

Also, we had Ken playing for us in the friendly. Having played in Agong's Cup previously, Ken is almost always "disqualified" from participating in competitions Ex-UM take part in. So normally we won't have the luxury of having such a big, strong and effective low post presence as Ken.

Despite these "caveats", the "Read & React" offense showed great promise and potential. With just 1 single practice, Ex-UM players were able to execute it, creating a lot of spacing whilst using the offense' flexibility to be creative as well. The offense (as advertised) also did not seem to require each and every player to have the same level of understanding of the offense system and had enough flexibility to enable the players with better understanding to play alongside those with less.

Tonight, Ex-UM will be having a 2nd friendly match this time against 5th College. Although one of their key players, Chee Ching (Center) is out with a finger injury, 5th College will pose a much bigger test for Ex-UM and the "Read & React" offense as 5th College still boasts 3 (healthy) current varsity player and 1 former player. Of the 3 current varsity players, 1 is arguably our fastest varsity player, another is virtually un-guardable one-on-one and a third is the most disciplined and hardworking player.

It will be interesting to see how the "Read & React" offense does against such better players. However, the key to Ex-UM's chances of winning, I believe, will lie more in whether we able to prevent 5th College from getting easy fast break points and whether we can defend them.

Sultan Cup 2008 - Update

UM has completed the Sultan Cup competition, finishing with a 1-2 win-loss record.

As expected, the team's performance showed how "not-ready" the team is for competitive basketball, especially on the defensive end.

Whilst the team played adequate / average defense, it was nothing like the tough, pressure man-to-man defense or trapping zone defenses that UM is famous for. There were repeated defensive breakdowns, missed assignments, "lost" assignments, failure to help and "illegal" defense (allowing opponent to pass the ball past halfline).

On offense, the Read and React offense showed great promise and potential. The coaching staff are confident that once the "Dribble Penetration - Circle Move" (Layer 1) is "habitualized" and other Layers are added on and similarly habitualized, the offense will allow our players to maximise their offensive skills and will be near impossible to "scout" or counter.

Some 1st year / junior players also showed great promise and potential, showing that they can play under pressure situations and perform reasonably well. Other 1st year / junior players clearly have a long way to go before they are ready to compete.

However, the competition also showed that our players clearly need to spend a LOT of personal time practising their shooting and following the competition, twice-weekly personal shooting sessions have been implemented.

Despite the rush (to register) and the "non-readiness" of the team, the competition was well worth our participation as it allowed us the opportunity to get a better understanding of our players, the team, the suitable rotations and a preview to this year's team's identity.

The team certainly has not "found its identity" yet and we will need much more practices, friendly matches and competitions for us to achieve that.

UM Training Squad Selection

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL UM PLAYERS

The coaching staff has decided to cut the UM basketball training squad down to 15.

Click on the "Read More ..." link for our reasons, our thanks and the names of the selected players.

REASONS

UM has played 2 games in 2008 Sultan Cup, both losses. Given the limited and often inconsistent training time we've had this year and the implementation of our new "Read and React" offense, the teams performance on offense was encouraging.

However, the team's performance on defense really showed our lack of training. After discussion, the coaching staff has decided to cut down the training squad so that we can concentrate on the selected players. Having fewer players at the practice session will allow those selected players higher repetition in drills and more focused attention from the coaching staff.

We have therefore made the difficult decision to cut the training squad down to 15 players.

THANKS

The coaching staff wish to record our heartfelt appreciation and thanks to all players that have been attending practices and training with us. The level of committment and dedication from many of the players are inspiring and serves as great motivation for us coaching staff.

Unfortunately our responsibility is to prepare and form the best possible team to represent UM and we regret that we are not able to continue to train and teach all players.

Our practices remain "open practices" and non-selected players are always welcomed to come and watch the practices and learn from observation.

SELECTED TEAM

Players that have been selected for the UM Training Squad are as follows:-

1. Amirul Effendy
2. Chan Poh Guan (C)
3. Chong Kok Way
4. Fong Kean Chang
5. He Long Fei (1st year)
6. Kelvin Kiew
7. Khoo Khai Horng (1st year)
8. Lee Chen Wee
9. Lee Zhin Han (1st year)
10. Lew Chee Ching
11. Lim Chee Sheng, Jensen
12. Lim Jinn Wen (1st year)
13. Ng Saik Poh
14. Steven Wan Chi Yuen (1st year)
15. Tee Kee Jing (1st year)

Our heartiest congratulations to the above selected players. We hope that the selected players will reward our confidence and faith in them by continuing or even improving further on their dedication and committment especially in attending practices. With the reduced numbers in the training squad, it becomes all the more important and critical that all players make the necessary personal sacrifice and committment to attend all practices.

On behalf of the coaching staff,
Coach Loke Yew

Sultan Cup 2008 - Update

Again my apologies for the lack of updates recently. I have been busy with work, doing a lot of overseas travels.

UM is taking part in Sultan Cup Div II 2008.

Our registration was submitted late as we did not receive information until after the closing date. Fortunately, based on our good relationship with Selangor Basketball Association (SABA) and the goodwill buult up over the many years, SABA made an exception and accepted our late registration.

Unfortunately, we have been drawn into a very strong group, with both Puchong BA and Kajitsu in the same group. Also, our practices so far has been repeatedly interrupted by circumstances, non-availability of (lighted) outdoor basketball court and bad weather (we have not even got to use the indoor basketball court even once yet this year!), our team is poorly prepared for competition right now.

As a result, we do not have any specific goals as far as achievement in the competition. Our goals will be:-

1. To grow and mature further as a (new) team;
2. To find our new rotation (each team has its own ideal rotation);
3. To gain competition experience, especially for the 1st years; and
4. To gain practical experience in the application of our newly implemented "Read and React" offensive system.

My next post will set out UM's 1st round schedule and the team selected to participate in this competition.

All non-selected players are encouraged to attend the competition games to gain experience through observation.

All Ex-UM players are highly encouraged to attend to provide moral support and valued suggestions.
