UM Achievements Todate

I've been meaning to set out on one page, UM's achievements to date, for a long time now.

I've finally got around to starting it at : UMBBT Info Website - Achievements

I always believe "getting started" is more important than waiting to get it absolutely right / complete. I've therefore just started by setting out the more recent achievements. If you recall which year / season, which competition and the results, please state in the comments to this entry and I'll add it to our Info Website @ the Achievements page.

I'd also like to collect a team photo of each and every UM team over the years. If you have a team photo of your team, please email to me at : Coach LY's Email

Thank you.

UM Practices

With all the competitions UM had been taking part in, in 2010, we've hardly had any practices in 2010, after the 2009/2010 MASUM!

UM has just started their 2nd semester and we had our first practice this morning, at 12th College outdoor court. For the time being, we'll have to practice at outdoor courts until Pusat Sukan is able to let us use the indoor courts at Gym 1 or 2.

Attendance was poor this morning, only 5 players. Nonetheless, we went ahead with practice. We've got very little time now to prepare for MASUM 2010. We'll need players to be more consistent in attending practices as we move forward. Most players who missed practice did send me text messages, either explaining the absence (some were sick, some had emergencies back home) or apologizing for their absence. I do appreciate the messages.

Time for our UMBT team to refocus and rededicate ourselves to preparing for MASUM 2010/2011. Also, there may be 2 additional overseas competitions which UMBT might be able to go for in 2011, one in Bandung and another (previously Triennial now) Biennial Inter-varsity Games at Jakarta.

Happy New Year!!

Happy New Year to all UM and Ex-UM!

A new year and I thought it's high time we had a new design for our website!!

*Phew* ... what a year 2010 has been. Just look at the "Competition" links at the side and you can see the sheer number of competition and basketball ball games we've had! With many, many good achievements, not the least including MASUM 2010 CHAMPIONS as well as Merdeka Cup Champions, Sultan Cup Subang Zone Champions and Sultan Cup overall / Inter Zone 2nd Runners-Up finishing for our UM boys.

Ex-UM too did fairly well, finishing 4th in KL Open and advancing to the Sultan Cup Subang Zone Semi-Finals.

Well done and congratulations to all!!

May the new 2011 year bring joy, prosperity and, of course, many, many more basketball games and competitions!! Cheers!

Competition Update

Ex-UM did not take part in any competitions for the better part of 2009.

The last competition Ex-UM played was in Carlsberg Cup in December of 2008. Since then till September of 2009, Ex-UM did not take part in any competition, mainly because I was so busy with work I only had time for UM.

Finally, in September 2009, we took part in Jenjarom Cup. We played 2 games. Lost both badly. Our performance was particularly bad in the 1st game. We were just so out of touch with competition game, we were totally lost in the 1st 5 minutes of the game (opponent, a young team, started on a 9-0 run!). It was a humbling experience.

UM took part in this competition too. They played better than Ex-UM but lost due to (1) strong opponent (2) lack of preparation as UM's 2009/2010 season was just starting.

Since Jenjarom, Ex-UM had been practicing (=social basketball) more diligently. Last month, Ex-UM took part in Klang Basketball League where we played a total of 5 games in the first round. I will provide a more detailed post on this competition in my next post. Since this competition started in December 2009 during which UM was on holiday, UM did not take part in this competition.

Currently both UM and Ex-UM are also taking part in Carlsberg Open 2009/2010, played at USJ 14 (Court 9), Subang Jaya. UM has already paid 2 games. Both losses but both well played, considering UM's lack of preparation again (just back from holidays and in the middle of SUKMUM). Ex-UM has played 1 game (vs OAE). Another loss, but Ex-UM's play continue to improve.

I will post the remaining schedule for Carlsberg Open in a separate post.

It is really evident and obvious that participation in competition games keeps our level of play high. Conversely, merely playing "social basketball" without competitive games really deteriorates our game.

We therefore must continue to take part in competitions as much and as often as possible.

Regards,
Coach Loke Yew

UM Practices - Break for Exams

As our players are having the 1st Semester-end exams, there will be no UM basketball practices for the time being, until after the exams (and maybe even after the Semester break).

Next practice will be notified by sms and here.

Players are requested to stay (reasonably fit) and to try to shoot some hoops on and off (but try to stay away from aggressive, pick-up games) during this time.

MASUM 0708 - Schedule

MASUM 2007/2008

This year's MASUM competition will be held at Kota Kinabalu, Sabah from 21st May 2008 to 28th May 2008.

Centralized training will begin 4th May 2008 and continue daily right up to 19th May 2008.

Both the boys and girls teams are scheduled to depart KLIA for KK on 20th May 2008.

Based on current / preliminary information, UM is in Group A together with UMS and UiAM. UMS is usually quite strong (or at least above average) whilst UiAM is always unpredictable. UM must prepare themselves fully and to our very best.

It is UM's study week, next week and the week after that (and for some, right up to the 1st or 2nd week of May) will be UM's final exams. We will continue to run our practice sessions but we understand that players may not be able to attend all practices. Nonetheless, the coaches will continue to be present and will train / practice with whichever player turns up.

Players first priority must ultimately be their studies. Hopefully, all players have and will plan their studies well and will be able to come for at least 1 or 2 sessions a week even during the exams, so as to keep and maintain their stamina and fitness at a reasonable level.

This is the final stretch of our preparations for MASUM. To the players, the coaches would say : "Keep pushing and working hard .. .both academically and basketball-wise!"

Ex-UM Update

To All Ex-UM players,

... especially to "early generation" Ex-UM players (i.e. graduated in 90's)

How are you all doing? Where are you all staying/working now? How many kids already?

The rest of us had a very nice lunch gathering organized by Lee Teng last Sunday. It was really nice to catch up with each other. Pity you all were not there too.

FYI, Foong Hing and I now have 4 boys, Brian (11), Aaron (9), Eric (7) and baby Sean (2). Foong Hing says “enough” already so that should be it la. Foong Hing has left legal practice many years ago and joined Talam Corp (Developer) then MBf Unit Trust and now (as Compliance and Legal Manager) at MAA KL Mutual Unit Trust. I had been in legal practice in the same law firm (Christina Chia Ng & Partners) for many, many years (14 years!) but finally left them Sept 2007 and joined WCT Engineering Berhad (a construction company) as their Legal Senior Manager, Head of Legal Affairs Dept.

My older boys are now into basketball as well. Brian, Aaron and Eric’s school has a very good, professional basketball coach (national junior (U-12) coach) and they are learning really good fundamentals at a very young age. Brian and Aaron has taken part in several basketball competitions organized by the school. But then, my boys are into almost everything … badminton, swimming, cycling, football, track and field, taekwando, jungle tracking … Foong Hing & my weekend are scheduled around fetching them to this or that activity … Daddy/Mummy = driver!

Myself, I am still coaching UM boys’ team. Since I took over coaching UM team (way back in 1995!), we had always been competitive … at least making it out of the first round each year (save one) … losing in quarters another year but usually making it to semi or finals. We finally had some success last year, winning the MASUM (Inter-U) basketball competition for the first time after 17 years. The last time UM won the MASUM was in my 2nd year (and Kit/Gai’s first year!!) 17 years ago!!! Last year’s victory was an especially meaningful victory as UM beat a UPM team in the finals that had 7 national junior players … team work vs. individual talent. This year’s MASUM competition will be from May 21-28, at UMS, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Centralized training will be in UM from May 4-20.

I have also started this blog for current and ex UM basketball team.

During the lunch last Sunday, we met Aik Huey’s daughter, See Kok Loong’s daughter, Kit/Peng Peng’s daughter … who’s character reminded me so much of Peng Peng when she was in UM …, Renee’s daughter and Gan’s son. I've already posted a picture of the kids in an earlier post. I’ll leave them to tell us all more about their current situation, their lives, work and their kids.

Guys … please email updates (preferably with pictures) to me at lykhor@pc.jaring.my and I will upload here.

In the meantime, below is a recent picture of our kids and Foong Hing and I. Brian is already almost as tall as the Mummy!!

UCBL - Schedule

Latest news!

I've just been informed by the UCBL organizers that the Opening Ceremony this Sunday, 30/3/2008 has been postponed indefinitely as the Minister of Youth who was supposed to officiate it could not make it. The Manager's Meeting will still be held at 3rd Floor, Berjaya Complex (opposite Berjaya Times Square) at 9:30am, on Sunday 30/3/2008. UM players do not need to attend this meeting.

However, the competition games themselves are now planned to be held after MASUM!! Tentatively, around June.

That means we won't have any competition to make our final adjustments or test different unit combinations before MASUM. We will have to arrange for as many friendly matches as we can and will likely end up (like last year) still making adjustments into the 1st round of MASUM itself.

If any player or Ex-UM member is able to help arrange for (reasonable quality) friendly matches, please contact the Coaching Staff and/or Team Captain, Chen Wee. We have the use of the gym on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 9pm to 10:45pm and we can use either of these time slots for friendly matches..

Mid-Sem Report

We did not manage to get much practice done during the 1st Semester of this season for several reasons.
  1. We were not able to book any indoor Gyms for practice. As a result the usual Wednesday night practice had to be done outdoor at Resident Colleges (RC). Whilst RC5 has been very supportive, the lighting at RC5 court is quite poor. A few practices were held at RC12 but had difficulty getting the flood lights turned on consistently. And many practices were rained out.
  2. Head Coach Loke Yew changed jobs and his new Co worked on Saturdays. As such the usual Saturday morning practices were changed to Friday nights ~ and suffered the same difficulties as Wednesday night practices.
  3. Many veteran players, for various reasons, missed many practices.
We managed to cover and teach some individual fundamental skills but there are still much to be covered and we hardly covered any team fundamentals and have not even properly covered 1 team set (offense or defense).

For the 2nd Semester, the Coaching Staff's plans to remedy the situation are:-
  • Ensure we at least get to book the indoor Gym for Wednesday nights
  • If we are unable to book the indoor Gym for Friday nights, to move the 2nd session to Sunday mornings (no lighting issue and less likely to be rained out)
However, the Coaching Staff still needs each and every current player to rededicate themselves and to recommit to attending practices regularly. Remember, we are MASUM DEFENDING CHAMPIONS. Every team will be looking to defeat us next year.

And the championship we won last year was a result of the veteran's 4 (or at least 3) years' continuous dedicated and committed effort. Last year's 1st year players (this year's 2nd year players) must NOT take the championship for granted or think that it is very easy to achieve.

Universiti Malaya Boys Basketball Team (UMBBT) Website

Purpose of this Blog

A website was previously set up under tripod. However updating information on that website proved too time consuming.

It is hoped that by using a "blog" instead, information can be more easily and quickly updated so that information are current.
