We are MASUM 2010 CHAMPS!!!

What an INCREDIBLE and heart stopping finals game!!

We started the game with our trademark excellent aggressive half court
man-to-man defense. UiTM looked hesitant at the start and made some
early mistakes and had trouble with our defense. We pulled out to a
bit of a lead 6-2 and then 11-4.

But after about 5 minutes, they settled down and started to handle our
defensive pressure better. Then their expected full court press
started and forced us into a few errors and they started to close the
gap. By end of 1st quarter, they had held us to 12 points only. Score
after 1st quarter : 12-7.

In the 2nd quarter, we started our own three quarter court zone press
whenever we had the opportunity and when we didn't, maintained our
good man defense. During this sequence I needed to let the starters
rest and started rotating bench players in. All bench players who
played, played EXCELLENTLY. There were mistakes but they all made up
for it with their heart and hustle. The game became a defensive battle
- our defensive scheme against theirs.

At half time, UiTM had taken a small lead : 22-21. An unusually low
scoring game for both teams.

At half time, I reminded our team that we must continue to believe in
our shooting. Our defense and their defense were playing each other to
a stale mate. The difference, I believed, would be our shooting.

Throughout the 3rd quarter, the score stayed close. UiTM has several
very good and super quick ball handlers and really tested our man
defense.

After 3 quarters, our shooting had staked us to a small lead : 33-29.

As we went into the 4th quarter, our shooting continued to allow us to
pull away. With 2 min 30 secs left and us up by 10 points (49-39), we
went to our usually trusty 4-down delay tactics. Everyone was
thinking, this is it, we've got the game won.

But then, our 1st 4-down resulted in a missed shot and UiTM rushed up
a 3 point shot that hit the front rim and bounced in. Our next 4-down
sequence, our team captain, Jensen, lost the ball and they had a
fastbreak layup. Suddenly our lead was down to 49-44! Time out UM.

We tried to settle our players down. We went back into our 4-down and
Jensen again beat his man off the dribble but passed to Poh Guan
instead of shooting. Not expecting a pass, the ball went out of bounds!

UiTM inbounded and rushed up court and got another layup : 49-46!!
Again we fail to score and UiTM scored again : 49-48! Time out UM
again with 24.2 seconds left.

I told our boys, just hold the ball for a shot clock violation and
we've got the game won.

After the time out, UiTM went into a full court press and we almost
lost the ball! Out of bounds in our favour. They pressed again and our
1st year point guard, Jack, threw a risky pass and the ball went out
of bounds off UiTM's player ... But referees called it UiTM's ball.
16.1 seconds left an UiTM called a time out.

I looked at Jack and was thinking whether Jack was still mentally
tough after the turnover. I have a LOT of faith in our players and
decided to leave him in. And he immediately rewarded me! On UiTM's
inbounds, Jack intercepted and stole the ball! UiTM fouled Jack. Jack
stepped up calmly to the free throw line and hit both free throws for
a 3 point lead : 51-48, with 14 seconds to go.

On the following UiTM time out, I reminded our players to never be
afraid to play overtime so that even if they made a 3 pointer, we must
inbound safely and not be too concerned with trying to score. Avoiding
a turnover would be critical.

When UiTM inbounded, we defended but off a broken play, a UiTM player
threw up a desperation 3-pointer that hit the back board an banked in!
Tie score : 51-51!! 9 seconds left.

Despite my earlier reminder (I was out of time outs), our players
rushed the inbounds and turned the ball over!! UiTM's center (No. 15)
got the ball and put up a short jumper that went halfway down and
(thankfully) spun out again!! Overtime!

In overtime, UiTM's small and speedy guards made a few shots and they
took a small 2 point lead. Our players scored too and kept closing the
gap and would not allow them to pull away. Finally our shooting
started to come through for us. With Poh Guan playing aggressively and
making layups and drawing fouls and Jensen making short jumper after
jumper and Kelvin hitting a critical and difficult layup in heavy
traffic!

Finally with us holding onto a small lead (61-60) and time winding
down, they fouled Jensen who stepped up calmly to the free throw line
and hit another 2 big, critical free throws : 63-60.

Again I reminded our players, do not be afraid of OT. UiTM ran their
play and their super speedy guard (No. 7) got loose at the 3 point
line. Jensen recovered and did a "fly-by". No. 7 calmly pumped fake
and waited for Jensen to fly by and then lined up an open 3 pointer.
This time it was off and we rebounded! Time ran out!!

Finally, after an exciting and hard fought OT game, we won 63-60!!

Thanks to all the supporters who came from near and far (some from
Penang and Johor!!) to attend the game and who cheered so hard for us
throughout the game. (see picture)

UUM v USM (3rd / 4th placing) (boys)

UUM and USM played an exciting and close fought game, with many clutch
plays on both sides, and the game going into overtime. Finally, UUM
prevailed after making 2 crucial free throws with seconds left, and
USM missing their final desperation 3 point attempt.

Final score (after OT) : UUM beats USM 77-75.

UM v USM (girls) - 3rd / 4th

UM girls had lost to UPM in the semi-finals this morning and are now
playing USM for 3rd / 4th placing.

It's now in the 4th quarter and USM is leading 56-33. Come on UM!
Fight! Fight! Fight!

We're in the FINALS!!

Our boys played another excellent game. This time, without any
"drama". Our first unit played excellent defense staking us out to a
quick an comfortable 10 point lead early in the 1st quarter.

From then on it was a matter of balancing limiting our first unit's
minutes (in view of the quick turn around to the finals) and
maintaining a comfortable lead.

Final score : UM beats UUM 63-46.

Finals is tomorrow / Sunday 10am against UiTM. UiTM is indeed a strong
team this year (but of course, so are we!!). It should be a good game.
Come support us if you are free.

UM v UUM (SF)

UM warming up for our semi finals game against UUM.

Will need to focus on coaching now. Will update later.

QF : UM v UPM

What a game! UPM started the game aggressively and incredibly
strongly, especially on offense. Defensively, this was our first test
against a zone defense and UPM played a great aggressive 1-2-2 zone
defense.

Despite our players' best efforts including us going to our 2-2-1
three quarter court zone press, we found ourselves down 7-23 after 1
quarter!

Howeer, both coaches and players continued to believe in our team and
our system and continued to plug away at the lead.

Slowly our offense started to come together and we started to score.
We scored 18 points in the 2nd quarter, but UPM continued to score as
well. Our largest defecit was 23 or 25 points!!

We continued to have faith and continued to play hard on defense,
making it tougher and tougher for UPM to score. Slowly we started to
close the gap. Our 3/4 court zone trap started to cause more and more
turnovers. And finally our 3 pointers started to fall for us. By the
end of the 3rd quarter, we had caught up and were only down by 2
points!!

In the 4th, surely and steadily, we started to overtake UPM. UPM
stayed mentally tough as well and would not let us pull away,
repeatedly closing the gap to 2 or 4 points each time we tried to pull
away. However as the game wore on, UPM's players started to run out of
gas and our press created more and more turnovers whilst 4 different
players hit critical 3 pointers.

Finally, with about 2 minutes left and us up 6 points, we went into
our "4-down" delay tactics. From there we either scored or UPM were
force to foul and our players made their free throws.

Final score : 82-71! UM wins!!

Next game = semi finals vs UUM tomorrow / Saturday afternoon 1pm.

Post practice dinner

Our players have had a good rest in the afternoon (whilst the coaches
were doing game stats!)

We then had our stat review and video session in the evening (using
the media room at the games venue stadium). After that we went to
USIM's outdoor court and had a good (& tough!) practice session,
working on those things that we felt (especially after reviewing the
video of the earlier game) needed some cleaning up.

We're now at a nearby coffee shop having fried noodles for dinner.

Players will need to make sure they get a good rest tonight.

UM is through to the quarter finals as Group B champions (after
defeating USM and UniMAP). We'll play the winner of UPM v UTM. UPM and
UTM will play each other at 10am tomorrow morning in the round of
sixteen. As group champions we get a "by" and skip the round of
sixteen, directly to the quarters.

It's likely our opponent in the quarters will be UPM. We'll know by
tomorrow afternoon and I'll update here gain then.

Game 2 (Day 4) UM v UniMAP

Post game breakfast.

After 2 days of waiting around, we finally played our 2nd game.

Perhaps it was the 2 day lay-off, perhaps the team felt this was a
sure-win game or perhaps players had the wrong focus (some players
mentioned at the start of the game "don't get injured") ... We had
what is for us a "sub-par" game especially defensively, with players
playing overly cautiously and not particularly inspired play.

Nonetheless, with our this year's new "if-you-are-open-and-it's-time-
to-shoot-but-you-don't-we-will-sub-you-out-immediately" coaching
philosophy (and of course the heavy time investment we have put in to
shooting all year long), our half court offense still produced at it's
usual 70-80pt per game average.

Final score : UM beats UniMAP 86-47.

This morning we all got up extra early to get in some practice at the
games court before the 1st scheduled game.

We weren't the only team that had the same idea, but we were the
earliest :)

Video session

We had our video session last night, going over the video of our game
against USM.

Yeah, it's hot and stuffy where we are staying.

Score at half time : UUM leading 38-20.

Our girls are playing hard. They've been having some success with the
3/4 court press but continue to struggle on offense. On those times we
are not able to press, UUM continue to pass and shoot well.

Score after 1st quarter, UUM leading 19-6.

UM girls' Game 1

UNIMAS did not send any team and the boys game between UMK and UNIMAS

UUM looks strong. Current score UUM leading 9-2.

UM girls team

Girls' team's first game is later today at 1:30pm. Girls' team are

Pre-game coaches meeting

Count down to game time has started!

Coaches (from left : Ming Lip, Pin, Loke Yew and Tak Wing) having pre-
game dinner meeting at "Ice-Room" at Nilai.

Part 1 of Mission - complete!

After another week of hard and tough training, finally our Centralized
Training came to an end last Saturday.

As the team is ready and well prepared, they are excited and keen for the
competition to start.

In our usual fashion ... UM! UM! UuuuuuuuuuuuM!!!

Assistants!

And these are our very helpful and lovely assistants, helping in all our friendly matches (and even some practices!) with score table and video camera duties!!

Kimberly (left) and Suo Kuen (right).

Many thanks to them as well!

Friendly Matches

During the 2nd half of Centralized Training, we started arranging for
friendly matches for the team.

We played a team from the Sungei Besi Army Camp twice, once at their venue
and a 2nd time at UM. UM won both games, the first 71-40 and we won the
second 97-37. SBAC is primarily a non-chinese team. Their fundamentals are
not that good but they had size, athleticism and are very disciplined (to be
expected from a military team).

Above is a picture of UM (yellow jersey) and SBAC (blue jersey) at the 2nd
game.

We then played a friendly against Monash University team. UM also won that
game 86-46. Monash is a young team but well coached. Their coach is Coach
Tean, who also played for and led the team called "Flame" and which recently
played against Ex-UM in Xballer Cup 2010.

Above is a picture of UM (red jersey) and Monash (purple jersey). Coach Tean
is in a red t-shirt standing next to Ming Lip.

Our thanks and appreciation to both SBAC and Monash for obliging us with the
friendly matches. They were certainly helpful towards our preparation for
MASUM 2010.

Regards,
Coach Loke Yew

Dinner!

After swimming, we had the customary "Si Mou prepared dinner" at my
house.

LOTS of food ... But disappeared very quickly!!

Swimming

After a week of hard and tough training, many of the players were
aching and some nursing minor injuries.

So we took a break in the middle of centralized training and took the
team swimming at Tak Wing's condo's swimming pool.

MASUM 2010

Our UM basketball team (boys and girls) have just finished 2 weeks of Centralized Training.

I had wanted to update our website but have simply not had any time. I've been on half day leave the last 2 weeks, so it's been : attend practice at UM in the morning, go to work and back to practice in UM directly from work in the evening till late night, everyday for the last 2 weeks!!

I must express my heartfelt appreciation to our Assistant Coaches, Pin, Tak Wing and Ming Lip for their tireless dedication and invaluable contribution. Centralized Training has truly been a team coaching effort.

My thanks too to the players for their commitment and unreserved effort, which i truly appreciate.

This year's team is a "new" team with 6 first year players ... that's half the team! We set a goal early this year to be GREAT at 3 things (1) Rebounding (2) Shooting & (3) Attacking (Defense and Offense). After almost a year's training coupled with centralized training, I believe we have achieved our goals. Now it's time to put it into application.

The players have checked into USIM (Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia) at Nilai and competitions will start tomorrow. We are in Group D, with USM and UniMAP. Games will be held at Stadium Tertutup Nilai (where Agong's Cup was previously held), right next to USIM.

Our first game will be against USM on Monday 24 May 2010 @ 2030.

Our second game will be against UniMAP on Thursday 27 May 2010 @ 0830.

To all Ex-UM and UM supporters, do come cheer for us at game times if you can.

Loke Yew, Khor
