UCBL G5 : UM v HELP Stats

UM lost game 5 to HELP college. HELP college were mainly African players, all big sized, agile and great leapers / jumpers. Final score : 60-76.

HELP has a very good PG (No. 12) who handles the ball well, has great court vision, made great passes and a very quick defender as well. We tried to "face guard" him but he was strong and quick enough to push away from the defense and get a pass on and off, so though we limited his touches (and managed to force 30 turnovers!), we were not able to take him out of the game totally.

We were "killed" on the boards due to their superior size and jumping ability. HELP got a total of 80 rebounds!!

We continue to struggle shooting the ball, and shot a lowly 25% FG% and a poor 45% on FT%. Indeed we have been averaging 20+% FG% over the last 5 games but we won our first 4 games because of defense, pace of game and controlling the boards. Because of HELP's (far) superior size, shooting became important but it continues to fail us due to our lack of practice. This area (shooting) therefore becomes an important area of focus for us during our upcoming Centralized Training.

Ching with his usual double-double 17pts and 10 rebounds. No other player is in double figure points or rebounds. Jinn Wen had 5 turnovers, many off soft, easily read / anticipated passes that were picked off and led to easy scores on the other side. Jack, as one of our primary PG's continue to turn the ball over too much usually losing the ball off dribble penetration attempts. Although Amirul did not record as many turnovers, he made many "off-target" no-look passes, resulting in the receiver receiving the ball awkwardly and often times leading to a turnover recorded against the receiver. All three (Jinn Wen, Jack and Amirul) need to improve in this area.

Nonetheless, I am very proud of our boys who played their hearts out, for 40 full minutes and never gave up no matter the score. Our biggest deficit was 31 points! But we kept pushing and kept pushing and when HELP lost focus momentarily at the end, we went on a big run and cut the deficit down to 16. Being a "league" competition, point differential can become important later.

Well done, UM.
