UCBL G2 : UM vs Methodist College Update

UM won its 2nd game in UCBL yesterday against Methodist College. I was again not able to attend as I am still overseas. Final score 70-21. Well done UM players and Coaches.

Yesterday UCBL game was against Methodist College not New Era College(my mistake). Our opponent is a very new and in-experience team, only start practice for a few sessions under Coach Ramesh (formerly UIAM coach). 9 players attended: Ching, Jensen, Amirul, Kelvin, Jack, Raymond, Kai, Cher and Hong Ten. We played great defense the whole game. Scores for the 4 Qs are: 13-4, 28-5, 5-4 and 24-6. Final score 70-21.

Defensively, we need to improve our on-the-line defense especially Kelvin, Kai and Amirul. Hong Ten and Raymond rebounding very well but need to improve their on ball defense. Hong Ten also shd practice on his shot blocking skill consider his height.

Offensively, we need to be more focused on our finishing. We missed a lot of makeable, under basket, shots especially Raymond and Ching. Focus on finishing your shots instead of settling for foul. Jack need to improve his lay-up skill. Our FT% also not good enough. Methodist College only play 2-3 zone defense for the full 40 mins. We pushed the ball up court very fast and got a lot of easy shots which is good. However, we need to work on our hook & look (be more patient on moving the ball and attacking the gaps between zone) when there is no fast break or early offense opportunity. Juniors like Kai, Raymond and Hong Ten need to learn how to set pin screens. Considering we don’t have time for practice before CT, I’ll advice you guys to focus on how to set pin screens if opponent play zone defense in the coming games (we’ll work on hook & look later in CT or if there is practice opportunity before CT).

As we can see from the score for quarters, we only score 5 pts in the 3rd quarter. After watching the video and do some quick stats, I found out that our low scoring mainly because we didn’t shoot the ball well in this quarter. We shoot 2/9 for 2 pt, 0/10 for 3 pt, 1/8 for FT! Also we had 6TOs (4bad passes, 1 3s violation and 1 travelling violation). If we cut down our TO say cut it to 3TOs and took a shot for the 3 remaining possessions, we would have taken 22 shots in that quarter (which is very much close to our 25 shots per quarter target). As can be seen from the video, most of the shots we took were open and in rhythm shots, we just did not have a good shooting quarter. I think it’s ok because it’s a very rare thing to happen in our game. Players just need to continue to believe in their shooting and to take shots whenever it’s there and crash the board when a shot is taken by your teammate. We had 9 offensive rebounds in that quarter. Well done! FT wise, no excuses, we need to work on it!

Other than the above comments, coaches are very satisfied with the intensity and energy shown by all players, considering the reduced number of players, back-to-back games and lack of practice due to exams. Our next game is on Sat, 28 May, 3.15 pm vs UTAR at UiTM. We will have our full squad on next week’s games. Come support us if you are free.

Special thanks to Fuji who drive all the way from Subang to UM to help fetch the boys to the game venue.

Cheers,
Coach Pin
