UM boys start off strong.
University Malaya who is the 2010 MASUM (Majlis Sukan Universiti Malaysia) Champion open their UCBL campaign with a good run to win their first two matches against host team UiTM and newcomer Methodist College.
In what could have been a rematch of last year MASUM’s final, UM displayed a tremendous performance and showed their game experience despite having only eight players in their roster for the opening game.
When asked, UiTM’s team captain Adam AR said that most of his teammates are new players as half of the lineup from last year team are already graduated. “Our goal is MASUM and this (UCBL) is the best place to test our new lineup and find our weaknesses.” He adds.
Both teams started the first quarter with some good defense but the host took an early advantage off the second chance to take the lead 16-10 as UM struggles to find their rhythm offensively. However UM fight back in the second quarter. Their shots started to fall in and Lim C.C (# 13) from UM was dominating inside the paint and scored 8 points in that quarter alone. UM took over the first half 31 – 24 and never look back.
In the second half, UM played more solid defense and managed to force a lot of turnover from UiTM’s ball handlers. As with each turnovers and failed attempts, the home team looked frustrated and started to lose focus. UM maintained their steady offensive flows and got a lot of open looks and made most of them. UM extend their lead to 52-32.
UiTM tried to regroup in the fourth quarter and played better basketball than their first three quarters but UM boys are just too good and more experience as UM won the game with final score of 79 – 51.
UM also won their second game against newcomer Methodist College with ease as they cruise to 70 – 21 victory.
