UCBL G3 : UM v UTAR Stats

UM played well against UTAR yesterday / Saturday 28/5/2011 in our 3rd game. Game pace was much better (than the 1st 2 games) with our team scoring 17 points on fast break. Free throw percentage was very low though and nearly cost us the game. Fortunately for us, UTAR's FT% was equally low. The game was close throughout but our consistent superior game pace wore UTAR down and by the 4th quarter, although the score remained close, and although both Ching and Jack fouled out, we were clearly in control.

In doing the stats, I discovered that UTAR had been given 2 extra points towards the end of the game (jumped from 71 to 73). The actual final score should have been 76-71.

Additionally, in the closing seconds of the game, the score displayed on the display board was also wrong! It was showing 77-73 when the official score sheet had recorded only 76-73.  The mistake on the display board is significant because if UTAR had scored a final 3 pointer in their last possession, the display board will still show us as leading (77-76) (although officially i.e. on the score sheet the score would have been tied 76-76) and UTAR would have fouled us to put us on the free throw line. Fortunately for the officials, UTAR never made their last desperation 3 pointer and the mistakes on the display score board and the official score sheet did not affect the outcome of the game.

Official final score : 76-73.

Well done UM! Our next game is later today / Sunday, 4:30 pm against INTI (who have 4 or 5 African players, most of whom are quite big and strong!). Come support us!
